Shorts are allowed in our hospital

I have received the video that has been circulating for 48 hours on social media networks more than a hundred times; as it is related to an incident that took place at the hospital where I hold a senior position. It shows a young girl irritated at being denied access to the hospital because she was wearing shorts. Thus, she affirms that the establishment is connected to Iran.

To be precise, the reason for the ban was the late visiting hours, as shown in the video. On the other hand, the “moralizing” remarks made by the night manager of Mount Lebanon Hospital – in the wrong place of course – were said with a clumsy, yet compassionate Catholic religious prudery, contrary to interpretations.

The following is the event of tyranny of social media that has been, I am sure, well beyond the expectations of the blogger herself. The credulity and polarization of our society in these times of anxiety and crisis have done the rest. However, beyond this incident, is the intolerance that I want to denounce, intolerance that leads us to refuse the other, not to admit his point of view, to jump at the first opportunity to denounce, to shout for scandal, to launch accusations against institutions, people; without listening, resolving or providing constructive solutions…
We believe everything that is said without verifying the sources and we take a stand by the most extreme situations emerging from false rumors. This is what worries me most and makes me doubt the ability to rebuild our country and claim it from those who want to harm it. It has become impossible for us to accept the idea that an institution is neutral, that an incident is the result of a simple misunderstanding; far from religious and political intervention/interference. Without good faith and objectivity, how can we defend the values of justice, integrity and freedom of speech? How can we build a tomorrow for our children?
Finally, this is my aim, I want to reassure the young blogger of her freedom to choose the outfit she deems appropriate for visiting a hospital. I also refuse to support sexist and macho comments that have been posted against her. Mount Lebanon Hospital – University Medical Center will always be a welcoming and comforting establishment for the ill and their parents, but also a place of freedom, tolerance and tolerance/freedom/professionalism. Compassion and empathy as well as respect for the patient are the core values of this hospital.

إرتداء السروال “الشورت” القصير مسموح في مستشفانا

الفيديو الذي تمّ تداوله منذ أكثر من ٤٨ ساعة على مواقع التواصل الإجتماعي، والذي تلقّيته أكثر من ١٠٠ مرّة بحكم وقوعه في المستشفى حيث لديّ موقع مسؤوليّة، يظهر فتاة غاضبة من منعها دخول المستشفى بسروال قصير وتتّهم المستشفى بأنّها تابعة لإيران.

بدايةً لنكن دقيقين، إنّ سبب منع الدخول هو الوقت المتأخّر للزيارة كما يظهر في الفيديو.

من ناحية أخرى، الملاحظات الأخلاقيّة التي أدلت بها مسؤولة الليل في المستشفى – وهي بلا شك في غير محلّها – فكانت بخلفيّة دينيّة كاثوليكيّة، فبدت محرجة للغاية، وذلك على عكس كل التفسيرات. الملفت في الموضوع، كان العمل الإستبدادي لوسائل التواصل الإجتماعي، بحيث أنّني متأكّدة أنذه تجاوز توقّعات المدوّنة نفسها. إنّ سجاذة وإستقطاب مجتمعنا في أوقات القلق والأزمات قد ساهم بالباقي.

لكن بعيداّ عن هذه الحادثة، فإنّ التعصّب الذي أريد أن أستنكره، التعصّب هو الذي يقودنا إلى رفض الآخر، و عدم الإعتراف بوجهة نظره، والهجوم في أوّل فرصة للتنديد بفضيحة والصراخ وإطلاق الإتّهامات ضدّ المؤسسات، ضدّ الأشخاص، دون الإستماع، دون تقديم أي حلول بنّاءة.
نحن نصدّق كل ما يقال دون التحقّق من المصادر ونأخذ المواقف الأكثر تطرفاّ إنطلاقاّ من شائعات كاذبة.
هذا ما يقلقني وما يجعلني أشك في قدرتنا على إعادة بناء بلدنا وإنتزاعه من أيدي أولئك الذين يريدون إلحاق الضرر به.
لقد أصبح من المستحيل قبول فكرة أنّ مؤسسة ما تكون محايدة، وقبول أنّ حادثة ما تكون ناتجة عن سوء فهم بسيط وبعيد كل البعد عن الأمور الدينيّة والسياسيّة.
بدون حسن النيّة وبدون الموضوعيّة، كيف يمكننا الدفاع عن قيم العدالة والنزاهة وحرّية التعبير؟ كيف نبني الغد لأطفالنا؟ أخيراً وهذا هو الغرض الأساسي من هذا النص، أريد أن أطمئن المدوّنة حول حرّية إختيار الذي تراه مناسباّ لزيارة المستشفى.
كما أنني أرفض الإشتراك في التعليقات الجنسيّة والذكوريّة التي قد تكون وجّهت ضدّها.
سيظلّ مستشفى جبل لبنان الجامعي دائماّ مكاناً للترحيب و الراحة للمرضى وأهلهم وزوّارهم، ولكن أيضاً مكاناً للحرّية والتسامح والأخوّة. الرحمة والتعاطف وكذلك إحترام المريض هي القيم الأساسيّة للمستشفى.

Les shorts sont autorisés dans notre hôpital

La vidéo qui circule depuis 48 heures sur les réseaux sociaux et que j’ai reçue plus d’une centaine de fois, étant donné qu’il s’agit d’un incident qui a eu lieu à l’hôpital où j’ai un poste de responsabilité, montre une jeune fille outrée de s’être vu interdire l’accès de l’hôpital en short. Cette jeune fille taxe l’établissement d’appartenance à l’Iran…

D’abord, pour être précis, le motif de l’interdiction d’accès était l’heure tardive de la visite, comme le montre la vidéo. D’autre part, les propos « moralisateurs » tenus par la responsable de nuit de l’hôpital – sans doute mal placés – ont été dits avec une bienveillante mais maladroite pruderie religieuse bien catholique, contrairement aux interprétations. La suite est l’œuvre de la tyrannie des réseaux sociaux qui a été, j’en suis persuadée, bien au-delà des attentes de la blogueuse elle-même. La crédulité et la polarisation de notre société en ces temps d’anxiété et de crise ont fait le reste.Mais au-delà de cet incident, c’est l’intolérance que je veux dénoncer, intolérance qui nous mène à refuser l’autre, à ne pas admettre son point de vue, à sauter sur la première occasion pour dénoncer, pour crier au scandale, lancer des accusations contre les institutions, les personnes; sans jamais écouter, résoudre ou apporter des solutions constructives… On croit tout ce qui se dit sans jamais vérifier les sources et on érige les positions les plus extrêmes à partir de fausses rumeurs. C’est bien ce qui m’inquiète le plus et me fait douter de notre aptitude à reconstruire notre pays et à l’arracher des mains de ceux qui veulent lui nuire.

Il nous est devenu impossible d’accepter l’idée qu’une institution est neutre, qu’un incident est le fruit d’un simple malentendu et qu’il est loin de toute interférence religieuse et politique. Sans bonne foi et objectivité, comment défendre les valeurs de justice, d’intégrité et de liberté d’expression ? Comment construire un lendemain à nos enfants? Je souhaite, enfin, et c’est l’objet principal de ce texte, rassurer la jeune blogueuse quant à la liberté de choisir la tenue qu’elle juge adéquate pour se rendre à l’hôpital. Je refuse par ailleurs d’adhérer aux commentaires sexistes et machistes qui ont pu être adressés à son encontre. L’hôpital universitaire Mont-Liban sera toujours un site d’accueil et de réconfort pour les malades et leurs parents, mais aussi un lieu de liberté, de tolérance et de fraternité. La compassion et l’empathie ainsi que le respect du patient sont les valeurs piliers de l’hôpital.
